Hi All,

This is the interesting article I have found on the web today.

Twenty-four-year-old Lara Casalotti was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia in December. Now against the odds, she's found a bone marrow donor.

The chances of finding a match were extremely slim because of her Thai-Italian heritage – only three per cent of worldwide of stem cell donor registers have mixed-race donors, but someone has been found that could save her life.

“I’m very excited to tell you some great news that a well-matching donor has been found and if all goes to plan then I will go to transplant soon.”

Lara’s best hope of a cure is a stem cell transplant, but a global campaign by blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan and her family found a suitable match.

“The donor will need to be a genetic match to her, and as you can see, I'm Thai, and her dad is Italian.”

“From the very beginning this campaign has been not just about finding a match for me, but diversifying the donor registries and just getting more people in the registries in general.”

Her brother, Sepp Casalotti, says the family is relieved.

“It’s a horrible time, it’s horrible news to hear in the first place but when you have so many people behind you, it just keeps you so positive, and Lara’s always known that this campaign has been more than just about her – it's trying to tackle this problem that we have of mixed-race and ethnic minority people having a much harder time to find a match.”

The donor's identity has to be kept a secret due to confidentiality regulations, but it's hoped they'll donate their stem cells next month.

The reason why I chose this article was because of the different Vocabulary used in this passage. Not only it is English-Related, it is also World Knowledge that I think all must know about. The difficult words are below.

Difficult words: aggressive (serious), against the odds (against a bad situation), bone marrow (soft, fatty material in the middle of bones where blood cells are produced), heritage (origin), register (a list of people or things), diversify (to make more diverse – different), tackle (to deal with), due to (because of), confidentiality (the state of keeping things secret).

2. For each category of adjectives describing Kevin's mum, use one sentence from the passage and give at least 2 examples. (Do this on the English Exercise Book)

5. Geography: Prepare geography in the news for those who have not presented today. You might present tomorrow, depending on the random number our teacher gives.

This is the homework for today (The Weekend). Sorry for the late post. Thanks to Theodore for the photo.

1. Science: Do W1B by Monday. Check your SJI Email for more information on when to hand up.
2. History: Read the Textbook pg 13-18 
3. FN Art : Bring sketchbook from next lesson onwards, and send photos to your group leader. Think of the three questions that teacher has given.
4. FN music: For those who have tablet or laptops, please bring them next Wednesday.
5. English: Look for an article about kindness or mercy and present why you chose it, what good sentences and vocabulary there are (highlight them) and complete this by Monday.
6. Express Chinese : Do workbook from Page 1-3.
7. Hindi: Assessment Book Paper 1 with compo 
8. Painting mural: Please contribute to the paint fund or ask your parents Nicely if they could sponsor a small tin of green paint (the casual shirt green) and a spray can of red paint . Or maybe if u could sponsor even $1 for the class funds, that will be great.

1. Complete the Primary and Secondary Sources History Worksheet and Submit it to your respective History Representatives by tomorrow.
2. Read your History Textbook Pg 13-18.
3. Sign the Parent Acknowledgement Form for the Sports Day Heats if you are participating in any other event other than 50m race. You should have received the form by today.
4. Prepare your Oral Presentation by tomorrow as tomorrow is the graded examination.
5. Reminder: Please remember to take your relevant stuff from the locker before recess for the corresponding periods after recess to avoid delay in class.

1. Prepare your Geography In The News article and get ready to share it with the class during Geography lesson in random order of Index No. during Week 3.
2. Prepare a SJI A4 Exercise Book for History Notes.
3. Read Pg 4-7 of the History Textbook.
4. Get your Orange Ring or Binder File with 4 dividers if you have not done so for Science.
5. Prepare a SJI A4 Exercise Book for Science Notes.
6. Remember to wear PE Attire for Sports Trials/Parallel Programme/Orientation Camp.
7. Check SJI Email Daily.
8. For the Independent Reading Portfolio (IRP), Prepare a Yellow File and Complete the Task on Advertising A Book.
9. Prepare your 1.5-2 minute Oral Presentation for Week 3.
